Busy in Prep!

We hope everyone enjoyed the extra sleep in on Monday! 🙂

Last week, many families attended the book fair and we hope you and your children are enjoying the new books.

We have been working at building our reading stamina in Prep and we can now independently read for 15 minutes! The classes revised the expectations for Independent Reading time last week and students were able to describe what it should look like, sound like and feel like perfectly! They know to sit in one spot, try all of their reading strategies, think about what is happening in the story and focus on their book. We also spend time sharing our reading with partners.

In Writing, we have been looking at expanding our sentences so that they are more interesting to the reader. To do so, we have looked at characters in our favourite stories, writing a brief description of them, including what they are doing and how they are feeling. The students are doing a fantastic job experimenting with capital letters and full stops too.

In Maths, we have begun to explore common 2D shapes and will continue this focus for the next couple of weeks. In addition to this, we have also looked at comparing numbers and identifying which collection has more or less. This week, we will look at using a hundreds chart to expand our counting skills and to gain a deeper understanding of  numbers and number patterns.

As our Inquiry topic, ‘How do we look after special and important places in our environment?’ is coming to an end, each Prep class has brainstormed a range of ideas for communicating our knowledge to the wider school community, in hope to have less rubbish at the school. We will keep you posted about these great ideas!

Finally, if you are interested in helping in the classrooms you are required to attend one of Laburnum’s Parent Helper Courses. We are hoping to run a session before the end of term and will let you know as soon as possible. Keep your eyes out for the date and time soon! 🙂

If you still require a Working with Children Check (to be able to help in the classroom too), please see this link: https://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/

Have a great week,

The Prep Team
